In honor of the 12 days of Christmas we're putting together a list of 12 reasons to get the gentleman in your life a watch for Christmas.
Be sure to let us know what you think of #4 in the comments.
1. Because he's a true gentleman
A true gentleman knows that his appearance says a lot about him.
Every detail from the shave, to the hair cut, suit, shoes, and spectacles everything is carefully taken care.
Why should the wrist be any different?
If you have a budding gentleman in the house or a seasoned connoisseur rest assured they will be delighted to receive a thoughtful watch as a gift. The right watch compliments their already top notch appearance and character.
2. His style needs an upgrade
Let's face it, not every man knows what type of watch to wear in which situation.
That Casio g-shock he wore to your sisters wedding last year... Probably not the best choice.
It's time he got a classy watch to be worn in all occasions.
3. A watch carries timeless memories
The discerning buyer doesn't just buy any watch - the discerning buyers looks to purchase a timepiece that will carry the memories of the one that wears it.
Each watch has the distinct pleasure of observing the wearers life.
Does the story the watch tells match with the history of the man?
4. He'll finally be on time
Psychologists David Ellis and Rob Jenkins conducted a study where people who had never worn a watch in their whole life were asked to wear a watch for one month.
Compared to a placebo group and a group who continued to not wear a watch, rather staggeringly, the watch wearing group actually became more punctual and conscientious compared to the non watch wearing groups.
So there you have it: science says watches make people more sensible!
If this concerns you, you can always ask him to take it off when you don't want him to be sensible.
5. It's an extension of his personality
It’s why you love him… he is quirky, manly, funny, or thoughtful.
Whatever his personality, the watch he chooses to wear is an extension of his personality.
The watch you choose to give him expresses the assets you enjoy most about his personality.
Does the watch you give match his personality?
6. It's a great conversation piece
An eye catching watch gets noticed and can be a great ice breaker.
Find a watch that you like that fits that ’story-telling' category and wear it proud!
Of course depending on the design and story of the watch you'll have more to talk about.
There are a lot of great looking and quality watches that get glossed over because they are so similar to what we are used to.
Then there are the watches whose design just begs to be talked about and the story be told.
Let's put it this way... If someone said,'cool watch' would you like to respond with, 'yeah my aunt Jemima got it for me for Christmas'?
OR, say, 'man let me tell you about this watch...'
I don’t know about you but I'm the later.
7. Routine increases productivity
The most successful people have shown the simple act of routinely doing any small task will create triggers in your brain that increase awareness and productivity.
That means when he unwraps the watch on Christmas day it’s the beginning of building the daily routine of putting on his watch.
Just by gifting a watch you’re encouraging positive habits.
8. It's a gift that last for generations
It’s no secret that of the precious heirlooms families pass down to their loved ones watches are on the top of the list.
A quality watch that’s 'seen some stuff’ and been through some experiences with the wearer(s) will stay in the family for generations.
Give a gift that will continue on for decades (maybe centuries).
9. Everyone needs a little more simplicity
Watches these days have literally 100's of different tools that can be added to them. And they all have the potential to make life a little easier.
Phones can now provide a lot of the features that used to be designated just to watches.
But not with the simplicity of a watch.
Before I owned a watch, pulling my phone out of my trouser pocket on the bus involved me leaning up against the person next to me, to give myself room enough to manoeuvre my hand into my pocket to get my phone out... Just to check the time.
Now that only happens if I want to play Candy Crush.
Remember, your watch does and should tell time and if you can't figure out the time when looking at it... then you probably should pass and get another watch.
This is why when designing the Morveau watch I chose to use actual numbers. Roman numerals look pretty but if I can't take a 2 second look at the watch and tell the time then the watch 'ain't doing its job'.
10. He has empty wrist real-estate
If he’s not wearing a watch - it’s simple… he needs one.
11. Good design inspires
Creating an environment where the best is harnessed is no easy task.
When you have every detailed cared for to provide an inspirational atmosphere it’s easy for a man to be inspired to greatness.
This is where a watch with unique but understated design can really influence this atmosphere.
12. He already has too many cufflinks, wallets and belts
Let’s face it you got him one of those last year… let’s step it up this year!
So there it is 12 reasons to get him a watch this year for Christmas.
Maybe you have your own reason you'd like to share feel free to drop it in the comment.
And if you're looking for a watch to meet your needs this holiday season... we make watches. Check out the Morveau store.
It’s the 21st century and it’s no secret that smart phones have made watches nearly obsolete. It seems like when someone asks “What time is it?” we are more likely to pull out the smart phone in our pocket than look at the watch on our wrist.
So, the question begs to be asked, “what is the point of wearing a watch?"
It can be easy to take for granted the rewards that both the form and function of a watch can bring to our everyday lives.
You could argue for style.
You could argue for functionality.
And, you’d be right, because most people use a watch for those purposes. BUT, there’s more to the reasons to wear a watch than just functionality and style. In this post we’re going to dive into some of those reasons. We’re not going to completely abandoned the classic reasons like functionality and style but we’re going to take a deeper dive and see the root behind why those are more important than you may have originally thought.
It’s not just surface level “it looks good” or, “it helps me tell time.” There is more going on… below the surface, in the recesses of our psyche… than we know.
You may have a solid reason to wear a watch but there are some out there that need a little convincing.
So let’s dive into it with reason number 1...
1. Watch Wearers are Scientifically Proven To Be More Punctual And Conscientious
Psychologists David Ellis and Rob Jenkins conducted a study where people who had never worn a watch in their whole life were asked to wear a watch for one month; compared to a placebo group and a group who continued to not wear a watch, rather staggeringly, the watch wearing group actually became more punctual and conscientious compared to the non watch wearing groups. So there you have it: science says watches make people more sensible! if this concerns you, you can always take it off when you don't want to be sensible.
*Since this post was published I've been contacted by the authors of this study with new findings.
2. It Can Commemorate Special Occasions/Events- A Reminder on Your Wrist
3. It's A Conversation Waiting to Happen
4. It's An Indispensible Tool for Making Life Easier
Watches these days have literally 100's of different tools that can be added to them. And they all have the potential to make life a little easier. Phones can now provide a lot of the features that used to be designated just to watches- but not with the simplicity of a watch- before I owned a watch, pulling my phone out of my trouser pocket on the bus involved me leaning up against the person next to me, to give myself room enough to manoeuvre my hand into my pocket to get my phone out... Just to check the time. Awkward. Now that only happens if I want to play Candy Crush.
5. It's An Extension of Your Personality/ Style
Sake is one of the most versatile and refreshing players in the alcohol world. Yet it remains cloaked in a veil of eastern mystery to many people. Today, we’re hoping to shed some light on the matter so saddle on up to the bar and we’ll begin.
What is sake?
Sake is a brewed alcoholic beverage made from rice that is produced from time honored traditions in Japan. While sake is often referred to as “rice wine,” it really is not wine at all. Sake is produced through a brewing method quite similar to beer. More on that process below.
How is it made?
The brewing of sake takes several months and begins, of course, with rice. Similar to other brewing and distillation methods, the higher the quality of the natural ingredients, the higher the quality of the finished product. The rice used in sake is classified by how much of the tough outer layer of each grain is milled away. The finer each grain of rice, the higher quality of the rice, and thus, the higher quality of the sake. Got it? Good.
Next, the rice is put through a series of water and steam baths and is introduced to a mold called Koji-kin mold. Once the mold has spread throughout the rice, the mixture is known as Koji (similar to a malt in beer making). The Koji is then mixed with water and more rice to create glucose from the rice starch. Yeast is then added to the sugary mix to create a mash, this step allows for the conversion of the glucose into CO2 and alcohol, et voila parallel fermentation.
The process in reality is much more intricate, but at least you now understand the basics. After the fermentation process the sake is strained of any remaining rice particles, pasteurized, filtered, matured, and bottled.
What are the different types of sake?
While there are literally thousands of styles of sake, below are seven main classifications that you can use to navigate your way around. A sake can be categorized by one of these terms or by a combination, depending on its production method.
The first four classifications designate the ingredients or method used to produce a sake.
Daiginjo-shu - Fragrant and full-bodied sake made from rice that has had 50% of its shell polished away
Ginjo-shu - A light sake made from rice that has been polished down by 40%
Junmai-shu - A full and flavorful sake made from a rice polished down by 30%
Honjozo-shu - A light, yet earthy and fragrant sake made from rice that has been milled down by 30%
The last four classifications speak to a sake’s aroma or flavor which can be affected by the grade of the rice or an aging process.
Kunshu - Has a very clear fragrance with a light body, best enjoyed on its own
Soshu - Smooth with a refreshing light taste
Junshu - Sake with subdued flavors, often enjoyed warm to bring out its innate charms
Jukushu - Matured with well developed, sometimes spicy or bitter flavors
So how do I choose a good sake?
Good question. Choosing a sake to drink depends on two things, are you pairing your sake with food, or are you looking for something specific to enjoy on its own?
After work drinks // Classic flavors
If you’re a classic afterwork cocktail drinker, likely to order a martini or gin and tonic, then a Junmai or
Ginjo may be for you thanks to their pure and smooth flavors. If you’re more of a rum cocktail or beer
drinker, you may want to try out a Daiginjo characterized by the high quality of rice used to produce smooth refreshing flavors. All of these sakes pair well with salty bar snacks, so drink up!
Event reception or appetizer course // Fresh + light
Found yourself strolling through a reception or convention? Stand out from the crowd with a
flavorful Ginjo or Junmai. These styles of sake will pair very well with light fresh foods like fruit or
Home cooked flavors // Earthy + fragrant
Home cooked meals are by far some of the most enjoyable. Toast your or your loved ones’ kitchen accomplishments with a classic Junmai. The clearly present natural flavors in a Junmai pair very well with sweet and earthy flavors often found in home cooking.
Sushi night // Bright + inviting
We love us some sushi. Take your sushi experience to the next level by pairing your next meal with a light
and mildly fragrant Honjozo. The light characteristics play very nicely with the delicate characteristics of
sushi and will also pair well with salad dishes or other fish dishes like ceviche.
Date night // Effervescent w/ a wild side
If you and your date are dining on delectables such as roasted fish, fried or roasted chicken, or even
roasted vegetables, you may consider pairing your meal with a Daiginjo. This style of sake is made from a
high quality rice grade and if brewed in the yamahai style, it will have a bold flavor profile.
BBQ pitmaster // Robust + spicy
Looking for something rich and spicy to compliment marinated meat or a juicy steak? A traditional Ginjo is
probably the way to go here. This sake has deep rooted almost spicy flavors that pair exceptionally well
with smoked or grilled meat.
After dinner celebration // Elegant + vivid
While we certainly don’t need to wait for a special day to enjoy fine sake, there are a few styles that
make a wonderful addition to a celebratory day. These styles of sake are extremely fragrant and distinct in
flavor, so they’re best enjoyed sipped by themselves while you take in your surroundings. Check
out a sparkling Junmai Daiginjo or for a heartier flavor profile, you may like a Junmai Kimoto.
Cheers to your sake adventures + happy hunting!
We’ve done the legwork for you. Below are a few honest pointers on how to enjoy your cigar in a social setting followed by a few helpful How To’s. A big thank you goes out to Lior Ben-Ami, owner of The Cigar Exchange in Wilmington, NC for his helpful guidance!

First, a word on etiquette.
We agree. There’s nothing better than celebrating with friends and family or capturing a small escape from your daily routine. Sitting back and smoking a cigar can be a great way to unplug; however, keep in mind a few of the unspoken rules to avoid looking like ‘that guy.’
Keep ‘em fresh. Unless you know you’re ready to take on cigar smoking as a serious hobby, purchasing a humidor isn’t recommended. We suggest only buying as many cigars as you can consume within a week. If you need your cigars to last longer, a good cigar shop should have specially designed pouches that can keep your cigar fresh for a few months.
Note: A common misconception is storing new cigars in the refrigerator, but this practice actually dries out the cigars faster than storing them in a simple air tight container.
Original photo by A. Babaian
A cigar needs to be cut in order to smoke it because you need to create an opening where air and smoke can pass through the body of the cigar. To use a cigar cutter or cigar scissors, carefully but firmly cut through the cigar roughly ¼ of an inch below the head of the cigar.
Note: Be sure to invest in a decent cigar cutter. A handful of poorly cut and therefore ruined cigars will quickly add up to the cost of a small, yet effective guillotine or v-cutter.
Patience is the key word here. When lighting your cigar, carefully hold the stick in your hand above the match or lighter, but do not touch the cigar to the flame! Slowly rotate the cigar until the entire foot of the cigar is glowing. Next, raise the cigar to your mouth and take your first puff. If needed, add a little support from your flame to ensure the cigar is properly lit.
Note: Be sure to only use a wooden match or butane lighter to light your cigar. Why?

This is one of the easiest ways to avoid looking downright goofy. Hold your cigar with the respect it deserves. Need some direction? Here are a few pointers.
Remember to puff and not inhale. Cigars are meant to be savored. Let the smoke fill your mouth, take note of the nuances in flavor, and then exhale. The general rule is to wait 30 to 60 seconds between each puff. This allows the cigar to cool and will keep the burning speed of the tobacco at a minimum without completely extinguishing the cigar.
Note: The wider the cigar, the more oxygen exposure, which equals a slower burn rate.
When smoking, you want to build up and maintain a decent amount of ash on the foot of the cigar. This enhances the flavor of the cigar and allows it to stay cool during your smoke session. Let the ash fall naturally as you smoke or if you must, touch the foot of the cigar to the ashtray and gently roll the ash off. (No tapping, it’s considered rude!

“Never snuff your cigar. Let it extinguish on its own by setting it on the channel of the ashtray, otherwise you will ruin something wonderful which passed through 200 careful hands before coming to you.” A solid etiquette lesson from Lior, owner of The Cigar Exchange. Once you’ve finished your cigar, set it safely on the ash tray and let it burn down, it will slowly cool and fully extinguish by itself.

Continuing the Journey
It’s a communal thing. It was apparent at The Cigar Exchange that patrons love to stop by and take part in this storied tradition together. Whether they’re recounting their day or commenting on the characteristics of what they’re smoking, there is always a rich conversation going on between pulls and the exhalation of spiraling smoke.
There’s no hidden formula. If you’ve found a flavor profile or brand you like, then keep exploring cigars with similar characteristics. If you’re still searching, dig deeper into the humidor, browse blogs like Cigar Insider, or better yet, ask the guy sitting next to you what he enjoys about his favorite smoke.
What's your favorite cigar?
You’ve arrived. Deciding to get into a hobby that requires an acquired taste and know-how can be daunting. From flavor profiles to the final selection process, we’ve outlined what you need to know before stepping into the storied and smoky world of cigars.

Where to begin
For starters, we recommend doing your research, so the fact that you’re reading this speaks quite highly of you. For the best guidance, pay a visit to your local cigar shop. The shop owner and staff will be able to introduce you to a well cared for and vast selection of cigars. They will also be able to answer your distinct questions. For our research we paid a visit to the warm and impeccably maintained Cigar Exchange in downtown Wilmington.

The inner anatomy of a cigar is comprised of the wrapper, binder, and filler. After the cigar is rolled, the key features are the cap, shoulder, and foot.
Handmade vs. Machine-made vs. Hand Rolled
Handmade - When the filler, binder, and wrapper are manually combined to create a cigar. The innermost tobacco leaves, known as the filer, are usually the same length as the finished cigar.
Machine-made - Typically a machine-made cigar is constructed out of short tobacco for the filler and the binder and wrapper are made from enhanced tobacco product to withstand the machine rolling process.
Hand Rolled - This is a combination of handmade and machine-made. In this process a machine bunches and binds the long filler tobacco leaves while a person hand applies the outer wrapper.
Always handle a cigar by the band (also known as the ring). When lifting it out of the box gently hold the cigar by the band, never by the shoulder. The oils in your skin can bruise and alter the state of the cigar wrapper. Taking note of the cigar’s scent is recommended, but never touch the cigar to your nose. The worst thing you could do in a humidor or in a social setting for that matter is lick a cigar, avoid looking like ‘the new guy’ or as Arnold says “an amatur.”
Original photo by: IIizard
At first glance
When selecting your next cigar keep a keen eye out for the wrapper. A wrapper that’s oily in appearance is a good indication of quality tobacco and great handling by the manufacturer or shop keeper. Avoid a wrapper that is cracked or broken, those conditions often reveal poor craftsmanship or less than ideal storage practices.

It’s not what you think. First timers often spring for smaller cigars or the more expensive options. However, smaller cigars aren’t always the best option for the novice cigar smoker. Smaller sticks generally contain a much more concentrated amount of tobacco so the results can be potent. If you’re starting out, opt for a medium bodied cigar with a mild flavor profile. While width does not always correspond with intensity, these cigars tend to produce the most mild smoke.
A note on price
Similar to wine and whiskey, in the world of cigars you get what you pay for. However, we suggest refraining from an expensive cigar right off the bat. Purchasing several individual cigars at a lower price point will allow you to try more flavor profiles to reveal your personal preference. Once you know your favorite profile, making a higher investment per stick will be less of a gamble and more of a fun learning experience.
Pro Tip: Learn the lingo. Cigars are measured on a 64th of an inch scale. A 64 ring cigar will measure one inch in width, while a 32 ring label would describe a cigar with a half an inch width.
Cigar Ratings, photo by Alexis Babaian
Cigars are also rated on a system judged by Cigar Aficionado, a respected magazine in the cigar world. Each year cigars are judged on their appearance/construction, smoking characteristics, flavor, and overall impression.
Talking Brands with the Shop Owner
Asking a shop attendant or shop owner is the best way to begin navigating the cigar world, so we asked Lior Ben-Ami, the owner of The Cigar Exchange for his tips and top picks for newer smokers.
“A mild cigar would be a great and natural choice for a novice. From there, the individual should decide if they prefer a flavored cigar or a traditional cigar. If they’re going the traditional route, some great brands to research include Ashton, A. Fuente, Avo, and Romeo y Julieta.” Similar to the wine world, cigars are identified by the method used to produce them, their region of origin, and whether they are flavored or traditional. Flavored cigars may have additives or have been blended with essential oils to give a certain flavor in contrast to traditional cigars which are enjoyed for their inherent natural flavors.

Lighting is Important
Wooden matches or a butane lighter only please. This is crucial for your smoking experience. There are chemicals in fluid lighters and paper matches that do not play nice with the binders and natural state of cigar tobacco leaves. Using a fluid lighter or paper match can add unpleasant flavors to your smoke and may also affect how intensely the tobacco burns.
Hope this cigar smoking guide helped you on your journey. For more tips about cigar smoking etiquette and How To’s, check out part two coming at ya next week.
Do you have any tips to add?
A cool confident man isn’t just born: he is cultivated over time and once armed with the proper armor at his disposal, there is no turning back. To wit, the old adage ‘the clothes make the man’ may be true, but what cannot be omitted from menswear guidelines is the ability of carefully selected accessories that can elevate a man’s overall look.
"The clothes make the man"
A great watch is a great work of art, a product of intense engineering infused with fashion. How you choose one speaks volumes about your personal tastes and attention to details. Once you have discovered the perfect watch(es) to add to your collection, your road to cool, confident man status is all but assured.
Watches may not be necessary in the present digital age we now live in, but no men’s accessory packs as much of a sartorial punch. With such a current sea of bare arms on concrete jungles these days, make a lasting impression by finding the perfect watch to project an image that exudes class, strength, and confidence.
A distinctive watch is one area where you can stand out amongst your peers and with so many options to choose from - leather to pocket watches, chains to braided options – you can convey any look at any given time. Selecting the right watch allows you the versatility to display your personality in winning style. The best watches help you achieve a singular style by allowing you the freedom to add to your personal collection and connect with anyone you encounter.
With the price range for watches so expansive, you want a watch that is classic in look, but versatile enough to be worn at nearly any occasion, from the workplace to an informal social event. A watch is similar to a great suit: when you own one, your level of confidence is even more complete, with an unspoken appreciation from others given to you by respecting your attention to the finest details.
We just so happen to make a classic looking watch... just saying...
As a final word, avoid watches that prominently feature ‘bling’ as you don’t want one that distracts and takes attention away from the focal point, which should be you and the credentials you bring to the table. A great watch can differentiate you from the young boy with aspirations of strength and the man on the cusp of greatness. Choose your watch wisely and rise in the ranks across the board.
Don't do it...
How has your watch made you more confident?
